Help needed: 'Set Cache Directory as Writeable"
  • thebookerdudethebookerdude February 2010

I have just installed Simple Invoices. However, i am stuck on this installation instruction. How do i do this:

"Set the tmp directory as writeable. To do this cd to the Simple Invoices directory (cd /var/www/html/simpleinvoices) and chown the cache directory to the apache(web server) user (chown apache:apache cache) or if your lazy just chmod 777 the directory (chmod -Rv 777 tmp*) "

Any help would be appreciated. I am new to MySQL..

    hey thebookerdude

you just have to make the Simple Invoices tmp directory writeable - in unix you chmod -Rv 777 the directory

are you using Simple Invoices on a webhost or a local PC?

    cheers

Yeah, the problem is that many prospective users are lost after "chmod". thebookerdude, like me, read that in the install guide, but it was an instruction muddled in technical jargon so uninterpretable that it left us with no starting point to even try to figure it out.

It's unfortunate, I'd like to support opensource, but it's usually far inferior to proprietary, or you have to have the time to learn much more programming than most non-IT professionals will have. Kinda like me asking you to "interpret the significance of the hypointensities in the anterior corpus callosum, especially in the presence of the optic nerve demyelination and nystagmus."

    :(

Perhaps people who do not have any idea about running a website and a few basic technical things should search for other options: find someone to help, use a standard product. AFAIK justin can host a fully installed SI installation for a reasonable price. But I'm sure that there are lot of people to be found who can install the product for you.

I understand how to change my directory with cd, but...using the cmd window on my pc I get the following error...

'chown' is not recognized as an internal or external blah blah blah....

I have xammp setup on a PC (Vista) and am wondering if I should be running the chown command from somewhere other than the windows command prompt??

    Thanks,
    James

chown isn't the appropriate command for windows. if you're doing this locally on your own windows computer, you'll probably be most comfortable using the Explorer GUI for this - navigate to the directory in question, right click it, and make sure "Everyone" has Full access to that directory.

Thanks. Last night I figured out that attrib is the same as chown. I've been trying to set the tmp tile to writable by using the cmd window and attrib, but this has not proven successful for me?!

I've tried giving everyone access - admin and so on, but there is one user, the creator owner that it will not allow me to change? Everyone has total authority, but when I un-click the read only box in the tmp folder it doesn't do anything. In fact, it shows it un-checked and allows me to apply, but when I open it back up it is in read only again?

    Thanks,
    James

If you log in to your machine as an arbitrary (non-Administrator, non-creator/owner) user, can you navigate to the tmp directory with Windows Explorer and successfully right-click and create a new file or folder in there?

Sorry, but I'm not sure why I'd want to be anything other than an admin??

    Thanks,
    James

Because Apache certainly isn't running as an administrator, so demonstrating what YOU can do with admin privileges won't tell you jack about what Apache can or cannot do.
