I'm trying to set SimpleInvoices up for my company. For the last ten years we've been using an awful system involving spreadsheets, an access database and, since I got involved, the production of pdfs so at least we have a frozen copy of the invoice "as sent to client" for accounting purposes, prior to that it was all on paper.
I am loving SimpleInvoices. I have already hacked into the invoices module to make it display the invoice numbering we currently use. My main question is this:
Our charges per hour vary by client. Our services vary not only by client but over time as well. I really don't need to have the following products in the database:
consultant a consulting on project x at £50 / hr
consultant a consulting on project x at £60 / hr
consultant a consulting on project x at £70 / hr
consultant b consulting on project x at £40 / hr
consultant b consulting on project x at £50 / hr
consultant b consulting on project x at £60 / hr
consultant c consulting on project x at £55 / hr
consultant c consulting on project x at £65 / hr
consultant c consulting on project x at £75 / hr
consultant a consulting on project y at £50 / hr
consultant a consulting on project y at £60 / hr
consultant a consulting on project y at £70 / hr
consultant b consulting on project y at £40 / hr
consultant b consulting on project y at £50 / hr
consultant b consulting on project y at £60 / hr
consultant c consulting on project y at £55 / hr
consultant c consulting on project y at £65 / hr
consultant c consulting on project y at £75 / hr
consultant a consulting on project z at £50 / hr
consultant a consulting on project z at £60 / hr
consultant a consulting on project z at £70 / hr
consultant b consulting on project z at £40 / hr
consultant b consulting on project z at £50 / hr
consultant b consulting on project z at £60 / hr
consultant c consulting on project z at £55 / hr
consultant c consulting on project z at £65 / hr
consultant c consulting on project z at £75 / hr
And so on because we use 20 different associate consultants, have done over 6000 projects or type of work and have charged at over 100 different rates.
I need to be able to freehand this:
On the invoice I enter the number of hours worked manually, I enter the project description manually, I enter the rate charged manually. It multiplies it together for me.
I realise this is bypassing some terrifically clever functionality but I'm afraid it's functionality I don't need.
Can this be done? Has anyone done it before? Has anyone already built a module that does it?

grab the latest beta version of 2009.1 release - refer blog for details - you can now manually enter product prices in invoice creation
create a product called 'Consulting'
add x many Consulting line items and manually set the price to whatever you want
