edit config.ini and enable errors - see if any useful info spits out

That's the thing error reporting is enabled but it displays nothing...

hmmm...

only thing is to check the php and apache error log files for any clues

Yeah it ended up being something strange with the mysql.so extension. All fixed and working after a reinstall.
